I see cops doing it all the time. Even with doors open and the officer not even close. Granted, most people thieves included wouldn't touch it.
Heh, just yesterday some crazy broad stole an idling ambulance from a Chicago-area hospital and drove it all the way down to Champaign before they caught up with her.

Well, it's ridiculously rare as far as I can tell.
I know one person who went joyriding in a cop car and another who stole the lights from the top. Which is more people than I know who have done either of those things to non-cop cars.
Anyways we got the car back today but it has been in a bad accident and the interior is torn up almost like the guys thought there were drugs stashed in the car.
It's just as likely that it's the cops who tore up the interior, for the same reason.
It's never really the victim's fault whether they leave the keys in the ignition with the door open or whatever. It's 100% the fault of the ****ty person that jumps in and drives off. There could be cars left unguarded with their engines running all over the place and it would never cross my mind to take one. Don't blame your dad for the world being full of ****s.
It could've been kids in a nearby apt. building who saw a chance and ran out and grabbed that chance. I gotta tell ya, though, I've never heard of anyone leaving their car running and walking away, even if only to the mailbox (why was he parked 10 feet away from his mailbox?). I automatically lock my car when pumping gas. I never really thought about it, and now that you mention it, I'm not sure why I do it, but it just came naturally. Some of you people (= OP & son) don't have good instincts. You display risky behavior and make poor choices without being aware of it. Interesting that it seems to run in the family, too.

This is what I was thinking. Cops found a vehicle abandoned after a joy ride, and had to check it for drugs. It sounds like the OP and his dad live in some kind of bubble where this kind of stuff doesn't happen. They don't know what's going down in the real world. Do you guys live in an upscale suburb or in the high end part of town, where people don't even think about this stuff, OP?
