Basically they have long been popular. just the exhaust pipe rarely makes a real difference alone. In cold month more exhaust pipe you have the less it heats up on short trips and faster in goes out. That is why stainless of good quality is referred.

I love the look and sound of dual exhaust from V8 powered cars and up. One of the best looking quad dual exhaust is on the 2013 Shelby GT500 and it sounds so sweet. I replaced my stock duals on my 2011 mustang GT with flowmaster American thunder axle-backs and jba stainless steel headers, sounds really awesome and improved performance.

A few years ago I installed a crate motor in a guy's Vette for him and was shocked to see it had a phoney dual exhaust system from the factory...........one pipe going back to a split system of two mufflers. My Caddy has the same system, and I really don't get the point, unless it is just cosmetics.

But the OP is dead wrong, a true dual exhaust system (properly sized and installed) can boost HP quite a bit over the choked stock system.

But with all of the new emission devices on new cars it's not worth putting dual exhaust on. Will not get much hp. Would cost more than you would gain. And you would void any manufacture emission and power train warranty.

No to all. Putting a quality cat back exhaust makes power, and does not void any emissions or powertrain warranty.

When looking under the car, what does one look for to see if the exhaust is a fake dual v. truly functional?

You pointed out what I've been saying which is majority of cars out there has *fake* dual pipe system.

Single catback going to 2 mufflers.

In this picture, a quality single cat-back with a bigger diameter pipe would add more HP than this skinny single pipe going into 2 mufflers.

In my Subaru WRX STI, I had the entire up-pipe, down-pipe, and catback upgraded and gave me 25HP without an ECU flash.
