I know of people who live in St. Cloud and work in the Twin Cities - that is a 70-80 mile commute one way, depending on exactly where they are going. So 140-160 miles each day. About 35,000 - 40,000 miles a year, assuming 2 weeks of not commuting to work. That's just getting to and from work. Now throw in errands, weekend driving, visiting family, perhaps a few longer road trips...not hard to rack up the miles that way.

For a few years when I was in college, my father drove 62 miles each way to work 5x a day and 1 weekend day he would usually drive 30 miles each to hang out at his friends house in a new 2004 Honda Civic hybrid plus some errands. I think he sold it in 2011 with about 160,000 miles
i drive a little over a 1000 miles a week. my new 2014 tacoma i got 4 july weekend, i got 10400 miles on today. my last truck was four years old and it had 320,000 when i parked it, still run great, just time
A friend of mine is a salesman. He had a 2003 Chevy Trail blazer (he bought new). He did a lot of driving for his work; When he sold his truck in 2011 it had near 400,000 miles on the clock.
I used to live 45 miles from the office and from there it was all over southcentral Alaska from office to office, I could put 150 miles a day or more on the car, at least 30K mile a year. And I did use a Sonata at one time, and it was flawless (and boring) the whole time.
I live 40+ miles from my office and rack up ~30,000/year (more the past couple years with multiple family vacations).
It is amazing how the model year of the car has more baring on price than the mileage. My 2005 Accord is still worth $2,500 Private Party Value with 270k miles on it according to Edmunds. Not bad considering I bought it for $4,000 3 years ago with 160k miles on it.

I don't know about Edmunds but mileage is a huge factor for private buyers. I can't imagine a buyer giving a shrug to 270,000 miles on the clock.
There are many cars like that which show up in the Pocono Mountains here in PA. The reason: NYC has the most long-distance commuters in the country, and many of them are driving all the way from here 90 minutes plus each way. In addition, most people then, after their commute, live in rural areas and need to drive for all their basic services on top of their long commutes.
I do. My commute is 115 miles one way (then I drive all day on the job adding another 150 to 200 miles).
I am in the class of super commuter.
