I believe my '97 F150 had one of those problems. As I recall it was a switch on end of the master brake cylinder at the firewall. I think the new switch cost about $20 and took about ten minutes to replace. I can't recall what malfunctioned but it was the malfunction that got me to researching the problem. No fires though.
"The faulty switch can leak hydraulic fluid, overheat, smoke and then burn, and risks causing a fire even when the ignition is turned off, parked and unattended, the NHTSA said."
A seal in the brake light switch would fail, allowing fluid to contact the live electrical contacts. Brake fluid is flammable. In most vehicles, the brake lights will work even with ignition off.

I was at an O'Reilly's, I believe, when a fella with an F250LD pulled in with smoke coming from under the hood. His ride was burning from that switch. I think it had melted to where he could yank it off with some pliers, but all I could tell him to do was to drive on over to the dealer back the direction he came from and maybe they'd have the part for him. Lucky guy he was. I feel luckier that my '03 F150 was built late enough in the model year (April 1st order, actually) to where I don't have that problem. The switch in my truck is metal rather than plastic.

Yes,I use a 01 flareside ext cab as a DD and got a recall letter about 6 weeks ago on the tank straps..took it in and they also changed the switch..said they had had a few pull in there smoking over the years...its always parked in a garage full of tools at home or my shop full of LOTS of tools and customers boats/trailers..if it had caught fire it could really have caused me some major issues

My father is STILL getting recall notices for the cruise control switch on his 01 F350.
It doesn't have cruise control, never has ... so it doesn't have that switch ...

That's funny!
I didn't get a recall notice on my switch for some odd reason, but I did for the tank straps...I have several cousins with '00-03 flareside F150s(kind of a pissing contest around here dolling them up.lol) and they all got recalls for the straps, but none of us got the recall notice on the switch...when each one of us took our trucks in,the service dept said that we were under recall and fixed them all anyway..I couldn't talk them into putting a right balljoint on under recall unfortunately though
