Not an exaggeration on my part. We were taught this from an early age and all stick to it. I stick to it because we grew up poor and drove old vehicles that required a decent amount of maintenance. So we learned to make sure tires were good, oil was checked, etc... It's a habit. My wife's grandfather was a car dealer before he passed and her father owns a body shop. She was taught the exact same thing and she checks her own vehicle as frequently as I check mine over.
My kids are in the vehicle with one of us all the time. I'd rather spend a few minutes checking everything over than risking my kids life because I'm lazy. Not to mention, most of the vehicles I have owned have never broken down on the road because we keep an eye on everything and find things BEFORE they become an issue and take care of them.
Calculated risks are one thing. Negligence because you are too lazy to take ten seconds to give things a once over is a different animal. Crossing the street, you can SEE the accident about to happen without much effort. Failing to at least check your air pressure once a week is laziness and is not a calculated risk. The tire could be low and you could be risking your own life because you'd rather a light tell you to do something than taking initiative to do it on your own.
You may think it's an exaggeration or pointless, but luckily for most of us not everyone follows this train of thought. I spend just a couple of minutes looking everything over. It takes almost no time out of my day. If you are in such a hurry that you can't spare 2 minutes, that's on you.
