Mine was in 1972 f-250, it went no faster than 60MPH because of the gearing and rear.
My Uncle had 50's Chevy I think it was with a 6 but this was 30KGVW truck. Think that got 3MPG. It was interesting to say the least, you felt like you were driving a train. Think it was a 4 speed but you it also had a split transmission and rear. You could gear it down low enough it would literally crawl over a curbstone on idle.
The BMW M20. It was produced over a period of 13 years and was used in the Z1 roadster, 3-series, 5-series, and the special high-efficiency 528e which is basically indestructible.
One of the sweetest v6 engines I ever had the pleasure of driving and owning was in my 1991 Ford SHO. It was a Yamaha built engine. Very high revving and pretty indestructible.
Toyota's inline 6. The 2JZGE and GTE models are virtually bulletproof.
Nissan's older GTR motors. The RB26 is another motor than can take a crazy amount of modifications and put out an insane amount of power. The new VR38DETT in the current rendition of the GTR is amazing as well.
One notable V-6 from past times would be the old 231 GMC V-6, as used in mid-to late 60's pickups. Not particularly powerful, but very long-lived if maintained properly.
I said the same thing when I drove a 1996 Nissan Maxima. Unfortunately that was 15 years ago. They are no longer competitive.
15 years is not that long for an engine family. If the VQ is too old, why is that it produces more HP then its market competitors the Toyota GR and the GM High Feature? 350hp in the Nismo Z vs 306 in the GS and 323 in the Camaro?
I am seeing a trend here with Inline 6 bangers be they Domestic or Import seem to be the better engines over their V-6 counterparts in terms of reliability and long term durability.
Sucks that Stout, Simple and Super Reliable I-6 Engines in RWD/AWD/4x4 Cars/Trucks kind of disappeared for more complex engines

V6 engines are not any worse than their inline counterparts, in fact there are many V6 engines that i like. however inline sixes tend to be much simpler than the V6 engines you can name. the reason inlines have pretty much gone away, is these days there is no room under the hood of modern cars for an inline six, unless you make it really small, and that has issues of it own.
Depends. You want a V6 truck, V6 SUV/crossover that will only move people, or V6 car? I don't think anyone makes an inline 6 truck anymore and I believe BMW is the only make producing inline 6 in cars. Subaru and Porsche are the only ones offering boxer 6. A truck or SUV used for work like towing shouldn't have the same V6 engine made for the family sedan. It needs to have more torque and more sturdy built components. Most of today's cars 6 cylinder engines are of good quality.
