No one goes into fixing a car "knowing" more may be wrong with it. That's crystal ball stuff. Unless you get another "cheap" car new car prices are ridiculous. If you buy a cheap new car you'll be there sooner than later. If you keep buying new, cheap POS cars you will not be ahead of the game either.
That and sometimes a car is just a lemon. Even a new one.
Driving an '89 Corsica sounds worse than being forced to take the bus everywhere. I'd sooner go bankrupt making a new car payment.
I had extremely few issues with that car at all, it even had hardly any rust untill later on around the wheel wells.
I got my $100 out of that car 20 times over, I even used it to haul this oak bookcase I built, it's easy to see the condition of the car, and remember- this was a $100 car that never gave me any trouble on the road or failed to start, not some rusted out junker;
Lease is the best option.
change car every 3 years and never worry about fixing anything... well unless you lease German cars which break down a lot but warranty will cover it...
That looks awful. I don't care if someone paid you to drive it, it looks like a miserable driving experience.
Well EXCUSE me, it cost me absolutely NOTHING for car payments, I suppose you drive a Rolls Royce with leather interior and a wet bar, to me a car is nothing but 4 wheels and a seat to get you from point A to point B. It's not like I take 5,000 mile vacation trips by car- I hardly drive 400 miles in a YEAR. Last time I drove anywhere out of town was 10 months ago when I bought a puppy 150 miles away.
Most of the time the car gets driven only on really lousy weather days or if I have to go to Menards or something out of town or to haul plywood and heavy supplies home.
I ride a scooter that gets 80 mpg and doesn't require insurance, to and from work, and on errands as I have the last 3 years. It has 3900 km on the odometer.
In places like Taiwan a large percentage of people ride either scooters or small motorcycles- they are seen everywhere, the people who own dogs even train them to ride sitting on the floorboard;

Fundamental difference. To me a car is a source of fun and enjoyment. Hence why I wouldn't drive that. But if it works for you, more power to you. I drive 400 miles a week or more.
Instead of just selling the trash and getting a car or
truck that isn't as costly when it's time to repair it.
Long story short someone I know just spent 500
dollars fixing a truck that just craped out on him
less than a week later. The truck has been repaired
on many times before that. Literally thousands wasted
on it when he could have got somthing else that wouldn't
cost him thousands in repair bills.
Why do people do this. I know the question is
rather open ended but why is this. I myself
wouldn't spend thousands of dollars repairing
an old beat up car when I can come out better
by getting somthing newer that runs alot better.
Basically I would guess some wander why op does something. Its just like everything else really ;to each his/her own. Basically I think many wander why people spend multiple thousands instead of a thousand repairing what they have.

you probably wouldnt drive this car either;
but i like mine, and it can be a really fun car to drive, given a little modification such as just about everything that fits a fox body mustang. and it makes a great sleeper.
$500 bucks is nothing. Even is the guy put $500 every 3 months, he probably comes out cheaper than buying a new truck. Property tax alone in my county is about $350/year on a $20k vehicle. Now add in full coverge insurance (extra $500+ year) and a $300-400 car payment and it's easy to see why some people just pony up and fix an old car when it breaks...especially if they don't drive a lot. That's about $5-6k/year vs whatever repairs cost (some years is might be $0).
