It depends on whether the objective is to capture a snapshot of automotive history, or to invest in cars that are likely to appreciate (while still occasionally getting driven), or to just have several fine examples for spirited driving.
One possibility is:
* BMW Z3 M coupe; see http://www.z3mcoupe.com/; $12K?
* C5 Z06 Corvette, around $22K
* Early 1990s Mustang LX 5.0; $3-$5K for a nice one
* Early 1990s Miata; also $5K for a nice one, $3K for a decent one
* Datsun 240Z, 1970-1973 (prices vary greatly)
* If money's left over, an 80s or early 90s Chevy Caprice, with the 350 V8
For only 50k that would mean spending a lot of money restoring them, or having a pretty rough collection.
That was the main focus for me. Just a collection of my favorite cars(that are inexpensive). Hence maintenance wasn't an issue. If I had wanted a clean/good collection, the budget would have been like $1,000,000 and as many vehicles you could get lmao. Challenger, new Challenger Hellcat, 994 Porsche 911, Ferrari 550M etc.
I did find a 01 M5 a while back on ebay going for like $6,000. Needed major work, but hey, you own a M5.
A C5 Z06 Corvette and a Dually F350 Super duty 7.3PSD with a 6-speed Manual and maybe a striped Down E36 BMW M3 to tow behind the Super Duty and race at SCCA events as a track car.
I'd still like to have a 75-79 Granada, a 79 Versailles, another 78/79 Lincoln Continental, a 78/79 Fiesta, a 70-74 Econoline van, and a 78/79 Monte Carlo. Oh and a 77-79 F250 with the 7700lb GVW.
A Kenworth w900 day cab with a cummins and a 13 speed transmission and 3.73 gears
A newer F350, mentioned earlier
A 79 Ford F-250 4x4
An Audi a4 convertible.
