I own a 2008 Mazda 3I, and would recommend. Quick, reliable and fun to drive, plus good gas mileage. I saw one for sale just like ours with less than 90K miles for $5K, and thought that was a great used car deal....

I owned a 2006 Mazda 3s with the 2.3 engine and loved it. Light, quick, and handled great. Had the tranny not bit the dust at 138k miles I would have still been driving it.

The GTI is hard to beat, especially the new one. Great interior, great exterior, very fast, handles quite well, lots of interior room... and weighs ~3000 pounds.

VW Jetta TDI (turbo diesel).
Under $30k, comes in automatic, is a sedan, and is super peppy and lightweight. I love mine (2014).
It's super comfortable for me, too, but test drive a few vehicles yourself.

Mother-in-law bought a Honda Accord V6 2-door the same year. That thing is HEAVY. Yes, it has some power, but it feels like a tank compared to the Jetta, and especially compared to the older 4-door 1997 Honda Accord we used to have.
I test drove a Fiat, too. The "sport" button was a joke. Dealer, pressing button: "You feel that?" Me: "Feel what?"
I also test drove a Toyota Corolla. It was...a car. It had 4 wheels. Um...that's all.

-T.

2011 Mazda 3 hatchback owner here. Excellent "around-town" car and not bad on the highway either, although road noise is a bit high. Mileage is excellent, the car is peppy and handles well. I'd buy another one (although the VW Rabbit GTI looks pretty good, too...)

we have rented Kia Optima and Hundai Sonatas while visiting FL. At first we were surprised by them, now we look forward to them. Easy to drive, comfortable and peppy. Lots of standard features as well..

My 2.4L Sonata easily has just a much power as the old GM 3.1 V6 powered cars I've owned. It's probably even quicker.
