It is time to replace my airport commuter vehicle. It is used to drive 24 miles to park at the airport weekly and I have an infrequent need for a 4x4 for the hunting lease a couple times per year. I don't plan anything extreme like rock climbing in it, but there are a few muddy rutted tracks that hold water year round that I have to cross.

Was thinking Jeep Wrangler or Liberty, but not sure I need that much capability and at the same time afraid of going too wimpy. What would be a good compromise in a budget category? I am not going to get anything custom or luxury unless it is a revenge sale of the husband's baby at pennies on the dollar.

I was under the impression that Jeep had essentially the lowest consumer reports ratings of any current make.

Personally I've always been a fan of Toyota Tacomas, especially the early to mid 00's body style.

I'd go with a Chevy Silverado or GMC Sierra 1500. Good MPG on the highway thanks to cylinder deactivation and great all-rounders.

Budget is still in question, want to stay low but thinking somewhere between 10-15k may be reasonable. Never been in this market before. Want to stay kinda recent, maybe 2010 or newer.

How off road are these roads? Depending on the condition, even an AWD could potentially traverse them.

If you will be fording streams, you will want to look at true 4x4 off-road capable vehicles, not crossover AWDs, etc. The AWDs won't necessarily be protected from high water entering wheel seals, axle shafts, transmissions, etc.

For instance, my 1994 S-10 Blazer had a front diff vent that had a hose that raised the vent up to the hood level.
