They are trying to tickle the 90's Impala SS legendary almost-a-Q-car fancy of motoring enthusiasts.
That car was lame (my opinion), overpriced but sold... okay. Now it's rare and sought after because it's cheap "Power".
Same thing with that car as this new ss... huge underpowered engine (5.7 LT1 that made a lame 260 hp), big bulky body (4221 lbs). So it is identical in the fact that it is an expensive failure than answers a question that only a hand full of people asked.
True enough, but these days 4200 lbs isn't so unusual. The typical midsized FWD family sedan is now >3600 lbs. What's the new V8 Mustang? And the Camaro is heavier than the SS, the latter actually coming in under 4000 lbs.
How about the AMG C63? What does that weigh?
Regardless, anything with RWD is precious, especially if it still offers a manual transmission. I may never buy a Chevy SS, but I'm thrilled that GM has the fortitude to offer it in America.
I think t would be a great Daily Driver that would make a fun sleeper and still be great to haul 4-adults in comfort on long Roadtrips and the addec bonus not have to deal with people gawking and asking you about it.
I saw one the other day and I thought it was a Malibu, I knew beforehand that it is not a suped up Malibu. But I can definitley see the average joe getting the two confused.
I'm just stuck on the fact they called it simply "SS". That makes me think the mother of all super sport Chevys, which it is not. If it were putting out Cobra/Hellcat numbers to go with that price tag, I'd respect that. Otherwise I think they need to knock 10k off the price tag.

Why? Where can you buy V8 RWD 4 door sedan brand new at 35k for comparable features/tech (Brembo's/MagRide)?

'12+ SRT-8 is common.
For the coin the SS costs you can get a Hellcat. Chevy priced itself out. And just like the "diesel" options which cost a hefty sum more then their international counterparts then fail to sell because they overprice the market they will use it as the standard to say "people don't want fine RWD V8 sedans". BMW, meanwhile, will laugh all the way to the bank with their 5-Series.

I did a quick quote on the Charger with V8, starts at 36k but doesn't have any options. Adding some tech packages in, it is closer to 40k and doesn't have Brembo brakes or Mag Ride. The SS is 47k msrp so it seems comparable.
You can complain that SS doesn't start at 35k and that is valid, but Chevy doesn't want to sell a bare boned SS so the price do reflect the inclusion of a lot of optional equipment.
For whatever reason, GM has gotten into this pattern of bring over terrific Australian performance machines, styling them as sleepers, and letting them die on the vine. No effort in market positioning or advertising. They won't be able to do that for much longer since they are shuttering Holden.

According to the search I just did, the Hellcat starts at $64,900, which is about $18,000 more. I still say you can't get anything that can match the SS performance and has as much equipment in it at its price. I do agree the exterior styling effort was weak though.
