If I'm in the market for a car, made an inquiry, and we already spoke, you calling me 5 times a day, leaving 5 messages on my VM, is NOT going to make me decide any faster. As a matter-of-fact, I will likely just get annoyed and not want to do business with you...
Sheesh!!! Are they ALL like this?
I inquired about a particular car for my wife at 3 places, spoke with all of them, and since, all three keep calling a good 5 times a day. Being overly-aggressive isn't a good sales tactic.
Just because someone is working at a dealer selling cars doesn't mean they are a good sales person.
Some (but few) in sales have a knack for reading customers, massaging the right buttons, and working towards a sale. Most couldn't do this if their life depended on it.
I too will go elsewhere for a deal when I get a bad, pushy, or annoying sales person.
They're trying to get your business. Is it annoying? Yes. But they're doing their jobs.
I get that. One call every few days (at most) with a vm should suffice. Not 3, 4 and 5. There is no need for that, and it won't make me respond any sooner.

Yeah but they are being too pushy. I called a few dealers two weeks ago to look at a car and eventually bought one. I'm still getting calls from the others and one of them decided to leave a VM on both my cell (the number I provided) and my work phone even though I only used it to call out once and never provided it as a contact number.

Did you go in person or call?
I do my research prior to buying anymore (one valid use for the internet) so the only time I go to the dealer is to get the vehicle. I also don't call or email until I'm ready to go. That's to tell them to get the thing ready for a test drive.

That was my process. I picked the car I wanted, called three dealers that had it to verify availability and bought the first one I test drove since it was the higher optioned car and I got a ridiculous deal on it.

I filled out forms online.
They eventually called me, we talked briefly, and I said I'd follow up with them shortly.
Since then, it's been non-stop.
I don't plan on buying for another 2 or 3 weeks. They are aware of this.

The they're following up to make sure you're still interested and haven't went elsewhere. You contacted them too soon.

Your beef is probably with the sales manager or general manager rather than the salesmen. Chances are most of them don't want to call you any more than you want them to, but they've got someone looking over their shoulders asking "Have you followed up with so-and-so today?" every time it looks like they aren't doing anything.
I used to sell cars so I know what it's like. I know some people don't like the salesman hanging around if they're just browsing; but these days when I'm just browsing the lot and a salesman comes up to talk to me I tell him that I'm just looking at the new models and have absolutely no intention of buying anything, but he's welcome to hang out with me if he wants as long as he doesn't turn on the sales pitch. Most of them appreciate it because as long as they're out there it looks like they're working me for a sale, but if they go back in the manager will just make them come back out again. Or make them call leads.
