Believe it or not, I would recommend a Lexus SUV. Several years ago this would not have been the first car to come to mind, but after going out with a friend offroading in the desert and mountains in one of those, I have to say I was very impressed.
that price for the enclave believe it or not is very good.. not loaded down, that enclave is worth 28k-30k on a dealers lot. the price you were quoted, caught my eye right away 2014 w/12k miles for 24k ..not shabby at all...
My vote is for a Subaru Forester, or if you want more of a wagon, an Outback. Even an Impreza, which is a car, not an SUV, has ample room in the back for dogs or cargo. All have very good acceleration and mpg.
Ya beat me on the Forester. Mrs. NBP has had one for going on 6 years. She's very protective of it and takes offense if it's disrespected.

Oh I love the Enclave! Except the Buick I found was the Encore...smaller than the Enclave.

I like the lines of the Outback & notice the Foresters are a lot bigger than when I had one back in 2005.

They are. A bit higher and the body is bulkier. It will seat 5 fairly comfortably. Also, don't know your price point, but everything you'd want is pretty much standard (the favorite at our house, not mine, is the heated seats). Which I do sometimes wish I had in my F150.
Subaru Forester is a nice compromise, decent gas mileage, plenty of pick up, never left me stuck in the merge lane. Great on Ice and Snow. Fun to drive.
I have a Forester, my brother drives the same year/model, and my other brother bought a 2012 Forester.
I found a 2014 Buick Encore w/ less than 12,000 miles on it. Dealer wants $23,700 for it & not sure how low I could get them to go. $20G is a fantasy I guess, but at least it's a starting point. But it's 4 cylinders, turbo charged.
I'm open to any & all suggestions on what make & model, as long as it's AWD, small suv or crossover.
It takes a little time for the turbo to "spool" up and get to the meat of the power-band. That's no problem for a car. For something like a suv or other vehicle with some truck attributes, you want power in the lower rpm part of the power-band. That's what you need for an AWD or 4X4 when going through snow or mud. That's where a 6 cylinder is better.
I think a 4 cylinder, even a turbo one is too small for something like an Encore.

My wife has a 2013 Outback 3.6R (V6) which we like very much.
