Im here in NY City where we're expected to get 17-34 inches of snow. I notice that 2 cars parked on the street have their windshield wipers pulled up off their windshields and are up. what is the reason for this? so the drivers don't have to defrost the windshield and wipers after they've brushed the snow off their windshields?

Prevents the wipers from freezing to the glass if the snow is wet and heavy. Also prevents accidentally turning them on and shredding them on the ice on the windows.

this. Or add in using the scraper hard across the glass only to hit the wiper and ripping the rubber that way as well.

We simply poured warm water onto windshield back in ol' country to defrost it. That's about -40C winters. NEVER had it cracked and works instantly. We also never left wipers on arms and they will get stolen. He-he.

They will act as indicators of where the car is once buried under all the snow you're going to get.

I never do this when I park outside and expect a heavy snow load, because you can very easily bend the wiper arm when clearing snow, or if some heavy snow hits the arm. Then again, I always have an extra set of wiper inserts in the trunk or hatch, for just such an emergency, as in the blade gets destroyed by weather conditions.

hey bmwguy--just to let the other posters know we never even got the low end of 17 inches, only about 12 inches. yesterday at one point they said 17-34 inches

those 2 cars' windshield wipers are easily seen and those cars aren't buried at all

Im wondering if it pays for me to even shovel today since the plow might ruin all the work i did

im lucky i have access a ride as a back up

With 20 years of winter driving behind me in Buffalo, most of which my car has been parked outside all winter, I have yet to feel a need to leave my wiper arms up or encounter a problem with the blades, arms, or wiper system because of this.

Maybe once or twice a winter it might have made things more convenient... maybe... but the benefits of doing this regularly are not that great IMO.

Here in Vermont it seems that it's not mostly when a lot of snow is expected, but when we expect icing conditions that will make the blades stick.
