I will soon be in the market for a new pick up. Among all of the other considerations is the fact that I like to do all normal maintenance, minor repairs, and I would say some moderate work when needed. I have owned a number of cars, but my wifes 2009 grand cherokee with the 5.7 is the first I've owned where I feel like my skill and lack of specialized diagnostic eqip prevents me (or will as it gets older) from completing most repairs.
I want to avoid this on my new truck. I will have 25k to spend on a truck up to 3-4 years old.

What type of truck are you looking at OP 1/2-ton? or Heavy Duty/Super Duty 3/4-ton-1-ton and the other Question is Diesel? or Gasser?

There are plenty of aftermarket ECM software that will give full diagnostics. What truck do you need? 1-0/2-3/4-1 ton diesel or gas. Import or domestic.
25k will get you some nice trucks

You won't. All vehicles nowadays are like your Jeep and are now even more complicated. Gone are the days where backyard mechs can diagnose and fix engines easily.

Most likely 1 ton gas. Would love to own a diesel, but never have and again want to be able to work on it myself and keep it for 10 years plus.

So you would be looking at Fords 6.8 Triton V-10 and the 6.2 V-8, GM/Chevrolet 6.0 and 8.1 Vortec V-8's and Chryslers 5.7 and 6.4 Hemi V-8 Gassers.

OP IMO the best HD Gasser 1-ton Engine(s) would be the 6.8L Triton V-10 and GM 8.1 Vortec V-8 if you are going to go with Chrysler I would suggest going newer as to get the 6.4 since the 5.7 n HD applications is kind of of underpowered but still a workhorse of engine just the newer 6.4 3500HD Ram is some much better for HD application but they just came out upgradable engine option in late 2013 for the 2014 models Rams.

07 is the last year for the 8.1. If he wants something only 4 years old go with Ford V10 in a superduty. I don't know if the plug hole stripping is on the newer ones. But there are repair kits out there. And If you find one with a stripped plug hole you can knock down some money
