That is very irresponsible. Did he have his lights and siren on? Even if that cop was responding to a call he should not be going that fast. It is reckless and puts the public at risk.
Another thought, you were lucky he was in such a rush and didn't pull you over for doing 85.
A number of the toll roads in Austin are 80 MPH so 85 is not at all unreasonable IMHO {I used to live in Austin}....
Broward Cty, FL had a dumber idea.....run radar from a parked motorcycle from the left side breakdown lane inside a blind curve. Then when you see a speeder, jump on the bike, speed out into the left lane and go get them. Seemed like a good idea until one day, cop missed a gear change, bogged the bike down and got rear ended by a car at 60+ mph......

I see cops in Dallas that actually walk out into lanes of traffic to signal someone to pull over. As in, the cops are on the sidewalk clocking people and just stroll out into traffic to point at someone.
Too much guessing. No one really knows why the cop 'blew by you' without running lights or a siren. Yes, he may have been a moron, or, he may have been responding to a criminal activity call that required a silent approach to best apprehend a suspect. That's something police train for. I don't know what he was doing, either, so I'm not about to pee in his cornflakes.
On the toll road this morning traveling into the city cruising at ~85 and was in the left lane as I was passing a couple cars when a fast moving cycle appears behind me. I moved over to the right and a BMW bike with an Austin police officer riding blew by me. In light rain, on a motorcycle, before dawn, riding at over 95 mph on the toll road.
I find that foolish and just a little bit irritating for a law officer to display such irresponsible behavior. Thoughts?
I was simply pointing out that in other parts of the world, Police are equipped to catch and stop speeders, at very high speeds. In Italy they use Ferraris, and Lambos. In Germany it's BMW's and Mercs, with twin turbos.
Those barges that are used by American Police are topped out at 120 mph.

That kind of behavior is nothing new. What I dislike the most are cops who use their lights to blow through a red light when there isn't an emergency. Here in Houston, where the traffic is gridlocked at all hours of the day and night, this happens on a regular basis. Fortunately, most police officers don't do this and obey traffic laws, like the commoners do.

Jim B. In Toronto.
I don't know how it works elsewhere, but here in New York most agencies do not do pursuits anymore. If they chase someone and it turns into a high speed chase they break if off.
Also, alot of agencies no longer use motorcycles for general patrol duties due to the danger involved. Again, around here they are only used for VIP motorcade escorts, funeral escorts, etc. My local agency (appx 3,000 sworn officers) no longer even has a motorcycle unit, instead a select few officers in the Highway Patrol Bureau are certified on motorcycles. On vacations to Puerto Rico and Florida though I noticed that motorcycles are used for actual patrol duties.

They see more people on cell phones when sitting in traffic.
Cops always break the law; it is just what they do. My commute takes me past the main exit to the 'regional justice center' so I see a lot of cops driving to and fro. They always drive solo in the HOV lane, and always break the speed limit. If I see a cop driving the speed limit, I am shocked. These are the facts, ma'am.
