How fast would you drive on an open, multi-lane, and divided freeway under the following conditions?

1) There is no speed limit! You can drive as fast as you'd like without receiving a speeding ticket (of course, you would be still be penalized if you caused a wreck).

2) Traffic is fairly light, and it would be easy to maintain high speeds as long as you remained in the left lane.

3) It's a completely clear and sunny day.

4) Your car has good brakes and it can come to a full stop in a timely manner.

Depends on what I'm driving. My Ford is the most comfortable car I've ever encountered for driving at 65 mph. If I was driving a BMW, they don't break a sweat until you top 90.

I might inch up to 125-140 for very brief periods just for the fun and challenge of the laser-like focus of attention that that requires with a vehicle and tires in perfect condition and capable of safely traveling that speed; mine is good for 150mph, but probably overall drive the same speed I do now, about 75 mph.

If I had a ultra high performance German car I would probably cruise closer to 90-100.

Although this will depend heavily on which car I'm in (some cars will handle high speeds far better than others), what roads I'm on (long straights or sharp curves) and what the weather is like (clear, rain, snow, etc), I wouldn't have a problem going 100mph+ on a straight highway with the occasional high speed sweeper in either my 2007 BMW 530i or my 2010 Hyundai Genesis 4.6. I haven't taken my wifes 2009 Ford Fusion SEL too far above 80mph so I'm not sure what it feels like up there but it's a fairly well planted car so I wouldn't be surprised if the chassis was capable although the 4 cylinder engine might have trouble.

If there was no limits then I wouldn't drive a freeway at all. People already fly on some as it is. No rules and people would probably drive 200 miles per hour. Lol.

Under those conditions it doesn't matter have fast you can go, what matters is how fast you can stop when some jerk pulls in front of you.

With that being said 75 is fast enough. If you really want to drive fast do some track time at a school where you can do 150+ as much as you like.

At least in my area, it's not unusual to find daytime traffic moving at 85mph in the left lane on highway 280 and 101. These highways can get congested during peak hours so the normal flow is closer to 70-80 but there are significant parts of the day where 80+ is the norm. I'm not saying everyone needs to move that fast but for this reason I don't find 85mph a bewildering figure. On highway 5 where the legal limit is 75mph, it's common to find folks practicing the unwritten legal limit + 10mph rule and moving at 85mph.

Having experienced a no-speed-limit road in the Autobahn, I had a rented BMW 316 (E36) and I cruised 100 in the middle lane. I was not the fastest or slowest out there.

Driver training and qualification would have to be improved a lot here in the US to allow for high speeds.

If I had access to an Autobahn road as a regular thing, due to tire wear and fuel consumption, I would probably cruise about 80 most times I was in no particular hurry.

Very true. Are we in Germany where driver training is extensive, it is difficult to get a license and proper lane behavior is sancrosanct, or in America where any idiot goof ball can easily get and keep a license and we have to share the roads with their constant incompetent driving?

Except for the lack of a speed limit, I have driven under those conditions more than once. With my 2012 Forester and W rated tires 80 seems to be about right.
