I've been working as a salesman for two years averaging 19 cars a month. I made 60k this year, which is not a complaint. I really like my dealership and career change from hospitality, but I have never worked in this field before so I am interested in hearing about everyone else's pay plans and experience to get a feel for what it's like outside of my own dealership. My wife, our kids and I would like to move in the next few years so location would also be helpful. Thanks, all.
You are a rare breed, I just bought a new car and talked to a ton of salesmen. Only one had worked longer than a year, most 2-3 months.
What manufacture do you sell and are most of your new car sales a mini? If so you must get some kind of volume bonus.
I talked to a guy who only gets $100 mini. That seems so low to me. I think the days of your average car sales guy making 100k+ a year are long gone.
I think the service advisors do better than the car salesmen, but that isn't based on much personal experience other than knowing a couple people in the industry.

I don't sell cars anymore, but when I did I got a $400 weekly base (part of which was due to the fact that I also handled cashiering and TTL) and a 20% commission on net. Mini was $100.

So in order to make more than a mini you would have to sell $500 over some base number? What percent of your sales did that happen vs what percent where mini? Was used cars any different?
Yes. 100 flat for new cars. Used cars is where I can make a couple hundred depending on what we took it in at.
Sounds like volume is what you have to do. What is your opinion on number of salemen working each day? Over staffed, just right etc....
