About the only advantage I can think of to want the 5 speed overdrive is for slightly better cruising speed fuel economy. However. that has to be weighed by the expense and hassle of getting another transmission, swapping it over, and handling any computer/wiring/electronic issues by making the change.
However, I am not sure there is enough there to gain for it to be worth it. Different brands, but I had a 3 speed auto TJ Wrangler, and a 4 speed auto TJ Wrangler which had an overdrive gear. The older 3 speed (without overdrive) actually got better fuel mileage on the highway.
My guess is there is not nearly enough of a practical advantage to bother doing the swap.
Ok. This was my question. Was it worth it, could it be done (yes, I can do it), and would it cause any other issues. I was looking for slightly better gas yes, but also for long distance traveling with over sized tires and lift. Just wanted to see what the benefits would be and if anyone had done it. Thanks for all the responses!
I think you would get better responses from a ZR2 forum that might have peeps that have already done this. Asking such a specific question here is a shot in the dark.
4L60 is a 4 speed overdrive - 3rd gear is direct, 4th gear is overdrive.
I have never seen a 4 speed auto (in a car / light truck application) that wasn't overdrive.
