Like I said before do you want a retro looking muscle car to have wipers on the headlights and rear window? Or a new cadillac or lincoln not me.
Well wipers don't look good in general. I've never seen a set of wipers on ANY car that made the car look good. Have you ever heard anyone say...."Wow, those are a hot set of wipers. I have to get me a pair". They're there for functionality. Not style.
An oddity from the hatchback world, the very early third generation firebirds (1982-1992) had an optional rear window wiper. It's rare to actually find one on a car, as they were only popular in the 82-84 models...might have been discontinued during that time. We've had one of those cars in the family since 1985, and can attest that the hatch on that vehicle (more fastback like) does not build much dirt or grime...especially not like the minivan my wife and I recently purchased...the tail on that thing is a dirt magnet.
The same era Mustangs had a wiper as optional on the hatchback models, I believe from 79-82 or so. Not a lot of them were made. I never really needed a wiper on mine to clean it, but I could see it helping if I parked it outside at night to wipe off the dew. I used a squeegee to clean all the windows every morning before we moved into a house with a garage.
I do use it often on my Vibe though. Since it is a hatchback wagon, it does get dirty. In the rain it is hard to see clearly out the back due to the aerodynamics, so it does help.

Which gave us "hidden windshield wipers" which parked themselves under the rear hood lip and made clearing out any snow almost impossible.

Correct that's why they would even look stupid on the back window and headlights.
Simple. When people ask for them you will see them on cars. On SUV's and Crossovers people expect them. Mini Vans had them because people expected them. We have one on our 2003 Astro Van. I don't remember ever using the rear wiper. On Mercedes and maybe other high cost cars you will see them probably because the owners of these cars like the idea that they have something extra that other lower cost cars don't have.
Most people want to hide wipers on cars. You don't want to see them on the window. Many cars have them fold into the hood area where they are not seen unless needed. I just don't see the trend increasing as most people are not going to ask for that as an option. When I am driving I normally look thru the front windshield. I have mirrors on either side to look out for other cars. If the rear window is so dirty that I could not see thru it I would clean it before I went anywhere. Once I am on the road what purpose would having a rear wiper blade serve?
