What's a maximum reasonable mileage for a used diesel pick up truck?
I'm looking at F250 (08-11)/Ram2500 (07-12)/Silverado2500 (08-12) in the low-mid $20,000's and most of them have from 100,000-150,000 miles in my price range.
Is it too high of a mileage for a diesel truck? How many miles do they last on average under normal driving conditions? Thanks!
What's reasonable to you? What are average normal driving conditions? Someone who works with the truck constantly pulling a boat or Bobcat or someone who turns it into a brodozer? The fact that these trucks still bring big money with over 100k mileage should be testament enough that they aren't used up and ready for the scrap heap.
If you don't feel comfortable with that, you can always go spend 45-65+ for a new one.
I've seen them with well over 300k miles still rolling, but as with anything YMMV.
Diesel engines last about twice as long with proper maintenance.
I would be more concerned about how abused the truck was and potential transmission issues, engines should be ok (ask for proof of oil change).
Maintenance is key. The overall condition will speak volumes. There are some Diesel engines with KNOWN problems that are very expensive to fix. Ask for proof of the repairs claiming those known issues were fixed
I would stay away from modified diesels
Properly maintained most any of the diesel offerings in a light pickup truck will get 500,000 miles on it before needing any major engine work. The rest of the truck will probably be crap but the engine will still run. If you buy the Dodge, ask if the lift pump has been replaced. Dodge lift pumps are noted for lasting about 80-100,000 miles and crapping out. Putting another Dodge pump will get you about the same mileage. Putting in a Cummins pump will probably last you the rest of your life. If the Dodge has an automatic transmission, they're not noted for long life. The manual transmissions run forever. The Ford 6.4 and the 6.7 have all had problems especially with the urea cycle.
If you don't NEED the pulling power of the diesel, do not buy one. They can get expensive quick. A diesel is not a happy engine unless it is doing work, kinda like per their design. Just going up and down the hiway does not make for a happy diesel.
