I think the average mile per year is 12k last I heard. 5k in five year is a grand mama car.

Maybe you wouldn't, but I surely do. I wouldn't be able to get anywhere I need to go without one.

I would consider under 10,000 good. My mother's 17 year old car hasn't hit 70,000 miles.

Purchased a 2004 SAAB in 2012 with 33K miles on in. That was low mileage. Sold it last year with 37k miles on after 2 years, but I work from home...

The average may have been 15k/year at some point, but IIRC the median has never been above 11,500 miles per year.

The breakeven point between owning and renting a car depends on a lot of factors. In general anyone who needs to drive on a daily basis should own a car. For those that can go without most of the time, renting becomes increasingly attractive.

So what is that person supposed to do ? Walk ? I drive about 8 miles a day, or about 2700 miles a year. There are some days I drive further, and some days when the car sits all day, so that is about what it averages out to.

My one Son flips cars, and he looks for cars that have from 50,000 to 80,000 miles on the clock. There is a mindset that says a car with 99,000 miles is low mileage, but 101,000 is getting up there. So he finds ones in that lower range easier to sell.

This. I would rather have a 5yr old car with 100K miles than 25K miles (as long as there is a service history). Much easier to convince the seller their price needs to be lowered due to the miles. Currently in the market for another full sized SUV and most of the 5-7 yr old ones start at 100K and the ones that are in the 50k miles range are asking about double the one with 100-125K miles. That is a heavy duty vehicle which most likely has never gone off road, being driven by the average suburban soccer mom. A well maintained one will last to 250-300K.

Well....... our cars are low mileage but we change oil, fluids , and belts and hoses regularly. 05 de Ville has 58 K and 09 Lexus has 22K I am hoping I don't have to buy another car for a long time.
