Should be really cheap. I think the SUV craze is finally slowing down as people realize how horrible they are at everything. Lousy handling, avoiding accidents and really horrible utility, unless you get a big metal box like an Excursion. Why not get a good car that actually doesn't have the aerodynamics of a brick?

When I trade my car it'll likely be for a crossover. Having a trunk gets annoying at times, too hot for cold groceries during the summer, and you can't fit big boxes or packages in there.

I am going to have to buy a new car and really want a small SUV type car. I know the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 are similar to what I want but I really don't want to pay $25,000.

Any suggestions of something similar with easy maintenance?

I am going to test drive a few options this weekend but just don't know where to start. I have thought about the Kia Soul and Hyundai Tucson but not sure if these are good options.

Any advice would be very much welcome!
I have the honda crv a 2002 and it has been a great car. Honda will soon have there hrv out which will be cheaper than the crv.

It's a sub-compact hatchback but has plenty of cargo space thanks to its folding rear seats.

The Fit is a great option. You can get a new one nicely equipped for ~$18K. They have great resale, are cheap to maintain and fit a ton of stuff. Mine is a 2009 model with 120 trouble free miles, to date and the new ones are getting great press.

Agreed, Fit is similar in safety to an older model like a Cobalt. Something like an Impreza has better safety ratings than a Fit.

2015 Fit was also named IIHS top safety pick winner. I really love the 2nd gen Fit with its new Earth Dreams engine but unfortunately wasn't available when I was last shopping for a new car.

Here's the problem with American cars though. Yes, they give you a big discount, but they also lose their value like there's no tomorrow.

I bought a used Toyota about a year ago. It's worth almost the same as I paid for it.

That is so untrue, it's laughable.
