I've got 18k to spend on a car. I don't need financing, so that will eliminate credit checks and dealer bs.

I was thinking about a 2015 corolla or civic, but I'm not sure. I'd love something new, but for 18k I could get a couple year old Acura tsx, which is a lot nicer of a car than either a Civic or corolla. I have next to zero mechanical aptitude, which is why I am thinking about a new economy car like the corolla and civic. The other cars in their class don't do much for me.

Can anyone give me their feedback? If anyone has a 2015 corolla or civic that would be even better.

You need to research the EXACT model you are interested in. If you plan to drive it for years keep it simple.

Not sure what you are requesting feedback on.
Civic vs Corolla -- Civic is a bit more fun to drive.
New vs used TSX -- used TSX, although you're not going to find a "couple year old" TSX for 18k ... more like a 4-5 year old.

Get a new car with a new car warranty.

There are many to choose from at this price.
Stick with USA models or models made in Japan.
Honda Fit is a good one.
Nissan Versa is a good one (made in Mexico).
Do check out the lower priced Chevrolets and Fords.
Avoid the Korean cars. Apologies to those who have Korean cars presently. But I'm not convinced yet.
On some of these cars you have to ask where they are manufactured - or view the window sticker.

Do not, under any circumstances, take on any type of luxury car or semi-luxury car that is used. Your repair bills will bankrupt you. Yes, these cars may last a long time without need for repairs. But when they come they are expensive.

In that category I'd probably go with an Elantra or Mazda 3. The new Corolla doesn't do much for me, and that dashboard design is ugly. The Civic is ugly too.

The Corolla or Civic would be your best buy. They are both ultra reliable, and will reward you with years of excellent service. Drive each and buy the one you like best. I did that, and decided on the Corolla.

$18k OTD for a new Civic? Yeah, not gonna happen.

And just because you're paying cash doesn't mean the dealer won't demand you fill out a credit application.

the dealer can demand he does backflips on his table also, doesn't mean he has to do them.
