The only REAL mainstream British brand is Aston Martin, McLaren.
Rolls Royce engines and drive trains are straight from Germany, BMW designs Rolls cars too. Alot of the features you see in a Phantom or Ghost are slightly redesigned parts from a 7-Series.
Bentleys are pretty much higher end Audis. Same 4.0L turbo as A8 4.0T and same W12 as the A8 W12. I believe the Mulsanne has a British engine, but the tranny is from VW.
Only reason you pay $100,000 more for a Rolls or Bentley is cause they're hand made in England. They are probably just as reliable(unreliable) as their German counterparts. No so much as it leaving you stranded, but more of random things going wrong. Like BMWs can't seem to make engine gaskets that will last 10 years.
The Miata remains the best example of those cars - only vastly better and not made in England.
The MGs and Triumphs have all rusted away or are preserved for a few sunny days per year.
No argument from me, but I still like them as sports cars. New/modern ones, done right, would be cool compliments to the Miata. Of course, it will never happen.. but thats ok.
vanity connection for the upper Ford management to have access to the cars for their personal purchases as manufacturers instead of retail consumers.
Actually I read somewhere that there was some patent details that Ford could not unload the brand entirely. It was buried in the legal details of the contracts.
I miss things like the MG and Triumph roadsters. Would be interesting to see something in the spirit of those come back.
My dad bought a new TR3A in 1962 and now it is MINE!
He paid $1800 for it.
It has 76K original miles and is probably worth $25+ K now.
No rust (it has been in Colorado most of its life) and I just put in a Toyota 5-speed tranny to alleviate the non-sychronised 1st gear and to give it lower RPM's on the highway.
Love it! Keeps me out of the bars since there is always something to do on it but they are very easy to work on regardless.
The “nationality" of a car has little to do with where it is built. Toyota will forever be a Japanese car in the eyes of the public and Ford will forever be an American car regardless of where the parts come from . It is a simple matter of perception. Does anybody think of their BMW as made in South Carolina? It is Bavarian.
