If you sell the truck privately, do you have something for transportation until you replace it?

If you sell privately NEVER take a check, been there done that.

Trading it in will have a price, you have to weigh it against convenience. The dealer takes it in at the wholesale price and sells it for the retail price. That is his bread and butter.

The NADA site gives wholesale and retail prices.

I have sold cars on CL and had good results. Most of them sold to the first person that saw them. My parents always traded. I felt like they were taken advantage of.

Honda Fit is considered the benchmark in the sub-compact category. It is safe, roomy, reliable, fuel-efficient and so darn cute. I would buy one if I were in the market for another car.

Scion is a dying company as their sales keep plummeting. Wouldn't surprise me if Toyota pulls the plug soon. Scion tC was named one of the worst cars by CR:

You'll get more money selling it privately but then you are dealing with liars, joy riders and possible murders. You may get less than you want at a dealership but you are paying for the convenience of not dealing with all that crap. There is some negotiation room as well at a dealership. The question is which are you willing to put up with??

The last vehicle I sold, rather than trade, was 20 years ago, and it was an '85 Toyota 4x4 pickup with about 40,000 miles on it. I had a used 3/4-ton picked out at a dealership, but they needed a bit much for a trade. The salesman, who I'd known for several years, advised that I put an ad in the paper asking $2,000 more than the dealer would give me. I followed his suggestion and placed an ad in our small daily afternoon newspaper. The newspaper usually hits the stands about 3 p.m. So a guy calls me about 2:30 p.m. saying he'd seen my ad in the paper and asked if the truck was still available. Yep. He was at my house 10 minutes later, looked the truck over and handed me the cash, I think about $4,500. No dickering.

In 2000 I traded in that one, an '89 F250 4x4 with 70K miles, for a new F250 4x4 diesel. I didn't get what I wanted or thought I could get for the '89, but I was in a bit of a hurry to get the new F250 for a trip we were planning. I took their deal. Then last fall I took that truck with 151K on it to trade for a small car (Prius). It had a hole in the turbo waste gate and had made an oily mess of the engine. The dealer said he could only give me $3,500 for it, because it was too old for their lot and because of the oil, so they'd have to ship it off (450 miles) to auction and sell it as a vehicle needing repair. It was clean, mostly highway miles, and would have sold for much more than that, but I was also leery of selling it privately due to the repairs it needed. I decided to take the easy way out and let the dealer have it for a song. It really did have several problems, and I figured I'd just let the next owner deal with them.

You didn't mention the mileage on your 1500. If it's low, like my Toyota pickup was, it should sell quickly off of Craigs List. If not, you might not want to mess with it. Or you could try for a week and see what happens. If no takers, trade it.

Haven't tried CL. Murderers. Don't need that. I have about 160000 on the truck and it has been handled like a baby with special oil and all that crap. I just hate to get in the "box" at the dealership. I don't know... I am going to take it to FL for a vaca for the last time and then trade or sell. Thanks guys. I love you. Leaning toward a Honda Fit though. You all helped me decide and I love the little looks........Never had a small car before.

I traded my old Forester. It needed major repairs and I was just grateful that I could drive it to the dealership. They gave me $900 and I was happy and they were happy. It wouldn't feel right to sell privately and stick someone else with a huge repair bill.

You are taking a lot of what a truck offers for granted and assume they will continue to be available in smaller cars. I doubt you’ll get nearly as a smooth a ride in a Fit and might miss the spaciousness of your truck. Rent one for a day before committing.
