Need to replace my car battery and was looking at the Everlast Maxx brand from Walmart... however they are indefinitely out of stock. The one I was looking at is 640 CCA, group size 35N (for a Mazda 3 2017).
Questions - what is the general recommendation on Walmart batteries? They are affordable at $120 and the other brands i've seen are almost twice the price (Duralast was about $240 or so, yikes!) and i'm not sure if Duralast is any superior to Walmart brand.
Any other more affordable decent alternatives? For $240 I could get an AGM battery so it makes absolutely no sense to spend that much on a regular car battery. Not sure why the regular batteries are so expensive.

I just replaced the Walmart battery that was in my 1974 Nova when I bought it. It was dated October 2017, so it lasted about 4-1/2 years. That to me doesn't seem long, but then it wasn't driven every day which may have affected it. I replaced it with a $169 Legend battery from Napa auto parts. Walmart's equivalent would have been $119, for me the additional $50 was worth it for the peace of mind.
Fortunately, batteries are one thing still mostly made in the USA and fortunately, not made by walmart. IT was Jonson controls which is now part of some new company that has at least 3 factories in the USA.
Its hard to beat the cost. I have an MS in my boat with a 2015 data code, the used one that came in my new junk car has a 2018 code and the one that gets the ever loving bejeezus rattled out of it in my tractor has a 2017 date code.
If you have one near, check out rural king - theirs IIRC are exides and the price looks good.
todays batteries, are being more and more built from recycled material and purifying the Pb is expensive and I wont bet my life everyone does the best job here

In decades past, car batteries would give you some sign they are needing replacement.
Today's autos have electronics that are a constant draw on batteries so there is no longer a "slow" start, it either starts or it doesn't start. I don't wait for that "doesn't start" sign. I just replace it on a 4 or 5 year cycle regardless.

My understanding is that there are only 3 manufacturers that produce car batteries and they simply make them to the specifications of the various brands. So the Walmart battery likely has the same manufacturer as the high end brands.

I dunno, I just buy mine from AutoZone. There used to be a place called "Mr. Battery" down the street from where I worked that carried oddball sizes, but I moved and I don't even know if it's there.
Honestly, a car battery is a small enough expense that the first time my daily driver starts showing evidence that its battery's nearing end of life, I yank that sucker out and replace it. Whole process takes less than an hour including the trip back to the store to get my core charge refund. What? $150 every four to eight years? Lot cheaper than tires.
