Majority of compact cars today come in either sedan or hatchback versions with the hatch being a few thousands more expensive than the sedan. Would it be cheaper in the long run if they skipped the sedan and focused solely on the hatch? I know the same could be asked about making sedan only instead of both sedan and hatch, but the compact class seems perfect for hatch.

I think, they should make 2 cars. 1 for family and one pick up truck. That's it. Easy to choose, and buyer should provide justification to why he or she needs a truck. Sorry, my bad. And a van. A work van.
So, three models, three vehicles. Easy choice, no gripes about why they do this or do not do that. Big Three, three models.
Yeah, I think it's a good commie idea.

Most people like choices. Just as there are many brands of clothing, colors, styles, and the same for just about anything, including cars. Whether 2 door Coupe, 4 door sedan, trunk or hatch, SUV/CUV that is truck-like or more of a station wagon, as long as people buy them, the manufacturers will continue to offer choices.

it sounds like a good idea to reduce the number of models on a particular platform, but what happens is that people then go and buy their choice of car to another manufacturer, and that is what car companies wish to avoid.

Cost less? Sure.

Be more profitable? Not necessarily.

Few thousand more for the hatch? What examples are you speaking of? Usually see around a $500 upcharge for a similarly equipped hatch. Only examples in thousands I can think of are when the sedan offers a bare bones with smaller engine trim that you can't get in the hatch.

Really more of a question with regards to what market demand is.

I know with myself, I personally do not like the looks of the hatchback and would prefer a sedan, no matter how more practical a hatchback would be.

The cost can be substantial for the manufacturer because they need to have two different unibodies. But if you need 2 lines anyway to create the volume needed, then it may not matter much
