One of my fears is being in an accident pile up! Have you ever been in an accident pile up? Did it make the news (if so, add the link)? Did you hit someone else? Did anyone else hit you? Did you stay in the vehicle or get out? Were there any fatalities?
Most I have ever been in is 4 cars. A guy in an F350 plowed into me, I was stopped. Caused $7K worth damage to my vehicle and pushed me into the vehicle in front of me which was pushed into another and another.
Kind of, was traveling the Northeast extension of the turnpike and it was stop and go traffic, up to 70 and back to 5.... Guy passed me in the right lane and moved into my safety space, simultaneously the traffic came to a complete halt. Started to brake hard and hit him slightly, looked in the rear view and there was line of traffic coming so I gunned it and pushed him into the car in front of him.
He had a hitch so there was small indentation on my bumper, he did smash up the front of his car and the back of the other guys car. Had the nerve to send me letter asking if we could settle it. Never wrote back and never heard another thing.
No because I NEVER tailgate and NEVER allow anyone else to tailgate me!
(I slow down or pull over and let the idiots pass - Note I am in the RIGHT LANE.)
Was just ahead of a fatal 5 vehicle wreck back in the mid 80s. It was a freeway construction zone and there was only a curb between the opposing lanes. Car went off the road right behind us, driver overcorrected, came on the road, went across the curb divider head on into a truck. I will never get the image out of my mind of the old guy dead, laying on the freeway, he had not worn a seatbelt and was thrown thru the windshield. I have noticed they do not do this since the 90s, there are always concrete barriers in freeway construction areas between the lanes.
Nope. It would be scary to be involved in one. I try to avoid driving during the winter months when the roads tend to be slippery and covered with snow. That's when many pile-ups happen

That's a bad spot to be in as sometimes people will accuse you of hitting the guy in front. Hopefully the insurance people did not give you too much of a hard time over it.
A very similar accident happened to someone I knew in high school, but he was the one in the big truck that plowed into 3-4 cars at a stoplight.

I was rear ended years ago with my wife while stopped at a toll booth. Because I wasn't tailgating I was able to avoid hitting the car in front of me with a quick application of the brakes. The slam was unexpected, and the young ladies in the front (with babies in the back) were obviously distracted when it happened. Other than mild neck pain the next day, we were ok and no damage of significance occurred to our bulletproof vehicle *grin*.
I've also managed to avoid potential highway accidents no less than 10 times because of quick reflexes and awareness of my surroundings. Just stay aware and drive defensively and you have nothing to worry about.

Yeah right. If only it was that easy. Sometimes you don't have time to react especially when you are the first vehicle that gets hit by a distracted or reckless driver.
