Thanks for link. A custom conversion is probably out of my league, but I ran across this and posted it in the Jeep forum:

Jeep may make Wrangler offroad pickup

When the Hummer H3T (Hummer H3 pickup version) came along I was almost ready to get one of those, even though everyone warned me against it--poor fuel economy, poor power, at least w/ the standard 5-cyl engine, and so forth. It was only made one (maybe two) year, and then Pres. Obama pulled the plug on Hummer. I looked around to see if I could find one in left over inventory at a bargain price, but there were so few of them made that dealers did not discount them much.

The CJ was the last real Jeep. They became more car-like with each iteration. To its credit, it has retained the Jeep persona.

How would you qualify that statement?

If by more car-like you mean features such as A/C, a radio, more powerful and efficient motors, quieter, or power windows then sure.

If you mean less capable off road then I would disagree. I would argue that the present iterations are much more capable. CJ's look way better though

I can’t speak to their off road capabilities because I am not into it. My point of reference is that Jeeps were known for their simplicity. The biggest change that made them more “car-like” was the big, one pice molded dashboard with car-like instrument cluster. When I was going up, the Jeep’s dash had to look like this. I know you can’t sell dashes like this but still...

Only CJ drivers who have never owned one say that. I've only missed out on YJs in my "Jeep career".

I went from CJ to TJ to JK over the years...all of them are awesome and there's no doubting ANY of them are still Jeeps.

It did take me 20 years to get over amber orange Jeeps though!
