Just saw it this morning. Apparently, Mercedes is serious about damaging their brand. When will they recognize that Mercedes became Mercedes by building big, expensive, luxury cars. This thing is a dead ringer for the Subaru XV from behind. I guess CLA’s cousin has to look like this.

...I think it looks good, and change is good.

The CLA is absolutely gross too. It looks like an economy car with its awkward proportions and shows that Mercedes is hell bent on moving down market. It's just a way for poor people to desperately hold on to some semblance of superiority instead of simply living within their means. This is coming from someone who isn't particularly wealthy but I tend to purchase used anyway to make the most of my money. Instead of the cheap (by Mercedes standards) CLA you're better off with a Honda Accord or Hyundai Sonata which will look better and have higher build/material quality.

What is it? It is the delusion of a "high end" vehicle.

In the 80's if you drove a BMW or a Benz you were doing something right in life to be able to afford one. Nowadays any one can afford these "luxury cars" and I think it has hurt the reputation in my opinion. If I buy an upper echelon car I want one that not everyone can afford because after all isn't that what makes it so desirable? Maybe its the lack of sales forcing them to put out models such as this just to stay afloat but it is unfortunate because they become no different than any other car on the road.

Looks hideous, but is it really any worse than all the other cheapish SUVs out there? They all look like crap.

Looks like MB wanted something to compete with the X1 market. I suspect these things will soon be filling the suburban driveways of middle class people who think the badge on their car makes them rich.

No, they already tarnished their image with the 2002 C230 sports coupe: a $25k Mercedes with cloth seats.

Actually the GLA has received generally positive reviews unlike the CLA. I would consider it if I were in the market for a $30k~ SUV.

I still think there would be more enjoyment with a Mercedes R-129 SL500/SL600 W220 S-class and BMW E36/E46 M3 or E39 M5 that are now used but in the same price range as newer CLA or base 1 or 3 series BMW.

But those older models were still built to higher standard back before the brands were some what watered down top be mass market and lost a bit of their cache same with cars like the Lexus SC300/SC400.

Absolutely right. If you can spare $400 month, you can get in a Lexus, Infinity, Acura, BMW or Mercedes. Millions can afford that. To really stand out you have to move to the next tier. Something that costs $800-$1000 a month, such as the LS460, 7-series, E or S class. And we are talking lease here. Now that is the territory not very many can venture out.
