Hey guys just wondering if there's a fix for sun faded paint? This car I'm interested in buying has quite a bit of it on the roof of the car but it's a real nice car so I don't want to be picky. I'm not that intelligent when it comes to cars so is it something that can be taken off with some wax or rubbing compound? BTW I'm thinkin a fix under $50 because it's not that big of a deal to me but if it can be remedied I'd sure like to know, thanks!

Here's a pic

That's not sun-faded. Your clear-coat is disintegrated and peeling. The only "under $50 fix" is to wet-sand it out, and get a couple cans of clear coat aerosol from your local parts store. Keep in mind that that is NOT going to be an ideal fix, but it will look a bit better than it does now.

That's pretty typical. It can't be fixed by compounding. The clear is separated and the base coat is exposed. You can sand to remove the loose clearcoat, then shoot new clear on it, but it's a short term solution and the problem will reoccur. The best solution is to prep and repaint.

Since it's on the roof, nobody will probably notice if you just put clear on it, at least in the short term. It won't last, but for a while it'll look OK.

Im guessing even if it's just the roof the paint job would be quite expensive?

How does the hood and trunk lid look? If they still look okay it would be a good idea to keep them waxed, or else they'll end up like the roof in no time.

Hood looks great but a little patch on the trunk lid, about the size of a baseball.

Buy it as a beater and drive the heck out of it. Or plan on a whole repaint if you are wanting a dating car.

What's been said so far is true. It's the clear coat de-lamination. It's an all too common problem on pretty much any car built in the 90's on up that used a 2 stage base coat/clear coat paint. To fix it right will not be cheap. I don't have a dollar amount handy I can tell you any kind of quality body work is expensive because it's time consuming to do it right. As the others have said, buy it as a beater and drive it as such. Sure you can do the "rattle can repair" but you'll be back to square one before you know it.

The most common cars I've seen that happen to are Nissan's and Hyundai's. Is that just me?

Would the best prevention be to keep the surfaces waxed?

Earl Schieb. "Paint any car any color 299.95." Of course I have not heard those ads for a while, maybe they are gone now.
