Back in the 60's I took all the car mags I could find. I still have all of the old Hot Rod, Car Craft, Motor Trend, Car and Driver mags in boxes. Occasionally they are fun to go back thru. I don't take any anymore. Petersen Publishing was one of the major publishing companies and after they sold out in 1996, the articles were so biased that they weren't worth reading, especially the dimwit articles at 4 Wheelin' mag. What a bunch of morons they were. Thankfully, the Petersen bunch is now defunct. Motor Trend is still around but their once heralded "Car of the Year" is such a joke that it's no longer relevant to the industry. At one time it was a major endorsement of a vehicle but today if the money is right, they'd have a horse named Spud as the "Ride of the Year". I see no relevant magazine for the auto industry.

As long as I remember, car reviews were little different from car advertising. It is true for other hobbies as well. Try to find bad gun review.

Try subscribing to any Hemmings mag at the usual rate (already cheap) and they'll start to flow in for the other three mags they publish. If you think how the magazine system works, the more subscribers, the more they can justify higher ad costs which is where the real money is anyway. I was seriously tempted when Hot Rod sent me an offer for three years at ten bucks and a free wristwatch. Just never could send the card back.

I still subscribe to Motor Trend, although I let my Automobile subscription expire. I mostly look forward to the "new cars" issue, which shows all the new models and updates in the upcoming year.

Magazine Subscription Discounts & Deals | Magazines.com does better than that, HappyRider.

Quite often they have sales for 4 or 5 bucks a year subscriptions.

Hemmings Classic Cars. The others get a few minutes if they happen to be in the rack in the dentists waiting room.

Thanks Bummer. A lot to go through. How do you like 12 issues for $222?

I do but it is getting frustrated as many including Car and Driver and Automobile magazine will enroll you in their automatic renewal programs which puts the burden on you to end the relationship before the timer expires and your CC is charged. There was nothing wrong with the old system except that some mags would never get the message that I didn't like their content and had no interest in renewing. Car and Driver can send all the late notices they want........Finally found a third party service on the internet for Automobile magazine at a rate cheaper than direct and with the option of opting out of auto renewals.
