Sounds like the insurance industry has said "Hey, guess what, we put some fine print in your policy so you're not really covered, but never mind, we have another policy we can sell you to cover that. That'll be another 500 bucks, please."
Most leases include GAP. If you have to buy it separately it should still only be 200-600 like people have said. Then you can divide that by the number of payments in your lease.

Our vehicle was only $28k but the gap from the dealer was $600, which we cancelled and got from our own agent for $20/year. On a 4 year-loan that's only $80.
I've had it with my insurance and it was like 2 bucks a month.. Not sure if its the same with Leases but I would double check and see if you can save some cash.
