I was reading an article that said automakers have a hard time selling unusual auto body types because Americans don't like "quirky" cars.

While I know that most people like the traditional styling of your average sedan or SUV, I count myself among the few that like cars that are unique.

Is there anyone else that like unusual cars like the Scion XB, Nissan Cube, Chevy HHR, Nissan Juke, or the Kia Soul?

Those cars aren't quirky. They're mainstream cars with "different" styling.
Saabs (before '07... the last ones have few quirks), Merkurs or anything French... now those are quirky.

I like the Kia Soul a lot. Super practical. But the only thing holding me back is the lack of a more powerful engine. Put the turbo engine from the optima in there and I'm souled.

I've never liked the cubes or boxes. I do like quite a few old, funny looking cars.

I appreciate cars with distinct styling. I am bored silly by vehicles such as the Ford Expedition, which doesn't have an interesting line on it.

But not all distinctive cars are attractive.

The HHR is a blatant rip off of the Chrysler PT Cruiser. The HHR is a GM's version of a nostalgia car and should be vaporized from the planet.

The Juke looks good from the rear, but not so good from the front.

The Honda Element had a long run - ultimately dying because Honda didn't refresh it and sales dropped.

I am the opposite, I like very traditionally styled cars and trucks.

I am more of a fan of some than others.

However, for the most part, all of those mentioned have had their day in the sun of selling well, maybe aside from he Cube and Juke. The Soul is a big seller for Kia, and Scion xB's had their day in the first generation.

To be honest, true sports cars are much harder to sell to the masses, and sell in far fewer numbers than most of what was listed here... and I prefer them to any of these toasters on wheels.

The HHR was to represent the small version of their old pannel wagon trucks. They did not rip off chrysler PT Cruiser all the big 3 were trying to go nostalgic Ford had the new 2 seater Thunderbird, Chrysler the PT Cruiser and the Prowler and GM the HHR and the SSR.

The Quirky Among Us-gmc-panel-truck-01.jpg This is what the HHR is suspose to resemble.

I like owning lower-production cars (i.e. under 20,000 units sold per year). My last 3 vehicles have been: Saab 9-2x, Honda Ridgeline and BMW Z4. I just don't like driving what everyone else drives. They don't have to be quirky, but they usually are styled in a unique way which is why they don't sell well.
