Most brake shops have a free inspection, go see one of them. Then you'll know for sure what is wrong. Though what you say about the mountain driving and high mileage I'd bet you're due for a full brake job.
Ok, I got new brake pads all round yesterday. They didn't do anything other than that - take off the pads and put new ones on. They said my rotors looked ok. Does this sound ok?

Incorrect. You will know for sure what they want to sell you, not necessarily what your car needs -- if anything. I have found these free inspections to be less than 50% accurate. Don in Austin

Squealing brakes are a good sign that they need to be replaced. Your car is 7 years old. How many miles do you have?
Squealing brakes are good sign they need to be replaced IF THEY SQUEAL WITH OUR FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL. That is how the "squeaker" warning devices work. Squeal WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED is typically a benign nuisance noise which can occur with 90% of the friction material left.
