I worked at a Mobil in he early 70's I pumped gas for customers and ran cc useing a older cc machine, the one with paper you had to slide over your cc. And all the pumps did not have any prepaid option.

And you had to call for authorization for a charge over $25. That was ARCO.
Once I bought some other stuff inside and got into a conversation with the clerk and completely forgot about the gas, they called me (small town, everybody knows everybody) and I went back and paid.
The other time my wife thought I had paid at the pump and I thought she had paid when she bought some snacks inside. I figured out that neither of us had paid a few miles down the road when she thanked me for getting the gas (it was her car) so we went back and settled up.
I also remember opening my checkbook back in high school and finding a check that I'd written to a local convenience store but apparently forgotten to give them. I don't recall if I bought gas on that trip or not, though.

In N.J., it's illegal to pump your own gas, so there's no self-service...
A couple of past occasions, I asked the guy for $5 regular, he put the nozzle in and I don't know if he just wasn't paying attention or what, but I look and it's up to $17! I of course yell at him that I said I wanted $5! Guy pretended he didn't speak English. So of course I only gave him the $5 and left. Thankfully ppl were there and saw what happened...no way was I gonna be accused of being a drive-off!
Back when you could pay with the pump still being in the gas tank......
I put it in to fill up, ran into pay. Paid.
Hopped in car and forgot to take pump out.
About 4 miles down the road a guy pulls up next to me and points at my gas tank.
I look, and the handle is sticking in it.
Yikes
The other day I thought I used up my Stop and Shop points at Shell. They remained on the card the next day so both my wife and I got the $0.10 discount from the same grocery ponts. I don't know if that counts.
