Need more info.

Typically the steering rack is connected to the steering shaft by something like this. It varies from car to car though and newer cars are going to electric steering now

Good photo Boston Mike that pretty much shows how it is connected. What sort of custom car do you have there?

To the OP Some cars have power steering that work with a pump off the engine which is why if your car stalls while in motion it is hard to steer. Other cars do not have power steering. Some newer cars are messing with electronic "steer by wire" arrangements but give me the old mechanical old reliable steering column shaft.

Not my car, but it's a Camaro. I just snagged a pic off the internet that best gave a clear representation of most typical setups

My check engine light came on my 2012 SUV. I run premium gas and change the oil and my tires are inflated to 120 psi. What could be wrong with it? It drives fine. Is it just a scam to get me to pay for service I don't need?
