The only time my windows are up and my sunroof is closed is if I have my family in the car. Even then if its nice out they like the windows down too. Not a fan of air conditioning, I sit in a/c all day long at work so the last thing I want is to be closed into my car.
I'd read somewhere that driving on the freeway with the windows rolled down at night is a signal to highway patrol that the person might be driving intoxicated. You roll the windows down to sober up and stay awake.
I do it sometimes on pleasant days, but I don't like for the wind to blow my hair around. I roll down both windows on the passenger side, and leave the other two up. The wind kinda comes in the open side of the car and circles back up to the front seat area, giving me a nice breeze without the negative hair impact.
With the windows open, I can smell the clover, fresh cut grass, and alfalfa. I can wave to people (and I do! Especially if someone's nice and lets me merge.)
I drive as often as possible with windows down. Because I always thought that saved on using a/c, but I'm not sure which is worse for mpg, driving with windows open and no a/c, or with windows up and with a/c????
While that was true with the SUVs that they used for their test, it might not hold true for more streamlined sedans and coupes that were designed to be driven with their windows closed. I think that extrapolating the outcome of a test with one specific vehicle model so that it applies to all vehicles is not necessarily valid.
I've noticed a lot of people do this but always wondered why. When driving around town, I like dropping the windows if it isn't too hot because the breeze feels great. But on the highway, the wind noise becomes so irritating and frankly unbearable. The radio's hard to hear unless turned up super high and it becomes difficult to talk to passengers. I'm no expert, but doesn't drag increase at higher speeds with the windows all the way down, negatively affecting gas mileage? I've seen drivers of cars -- both old and new -- doing this so it can't be the A/C is busted in all cases.
What drives me ABSOLUTELY CRAZY is when people with convertibles - who drive with the top down - HAVE THE WINDOWS UP??? Makes me just wanna scream!
