We park as far away from the entry door as possible so either way is fine with us because very few others park that far out so we are rarely surrounded by other vehicles.
I pull in, backing is just more trouble than it's worth. And if I am pulling in and there's an empty space directly in front I do pull up so I don't have to back out when I leave.
A few years ago I used to back into spaces most times....this was until I realized it is harder overall. It is harder to back into a space between two cars than it is to back out into a larger open car "aisle" when ready to leave. Pull in between two vehicles and back out into an open aisle. Can't be easier.
It now drives me nuts when I am behind folks who absolutely have to back into spaces. They hold everyone up while they back in. Get a life and be normal and just pull in. Of course, the best is when you can pull through a space.
I got into the habit of backing into spaces when I was driving a Dodge Ram diesel pickup with an extended cab and an 8 foot bed. During that time I realized how much safer it is to back in to park (if you can't pull through) and then pull out when you leave rather than backing into traffic that you may not be able to see well due to the position or size or tinted windows of the car next to you. It doesn't take any longer to back in than to pull in, really, if you're used to doing it.
bertwrench, if it drives you nuts to have to wait the couple of seconds it takes someone to back in, then the problem may not be with them but with our "instant gratification" society. And "normal" is in the eye of the beholder - my husband wonders about people that don't think about parking and just do it the way all the other sheep do when there's a better, safer way.
Depends on what parking spot you are talking about. At the mall, nobody backs in a parking space. The real question is after turning into a parking space and you realize the one in front of you is open, do you take that spot?
Backing is decidedly safer. Or, to be more accurate, pulling out forwards is much safer than backing out. This is particularly true as cars evolve to have terrible rear visibility, like my Prius. On the other hand, backing in is harder than pulling in forward, and it is close to impossible in some circumstances (where parking spaces are angled rather than perpendicular). I like to back in, but because of inconvenience I do it less than half the time.
It depends on the situation and what I'm driving. When I'm driving my truck it is actually easier to back into a parking spot vs. pulling in. I can back into a space just as quick as pulling in. If I'm driving my car, I usually pull straight in.
