Replacement parts can be an issue and a higher cost.
These cars are beefed up from the regular retail cars of same make.
Neighbor bought one at auction. He loved being waved at by many - thinking he was a police officer.
Mechanicals began to quit. I was there when the starter motor stopped. A drive to the salvage yard for a starter. Attempted to put in. It didn't fit correctly. Back to the salvage yard. There he was advised that the "police package" used a completely different starter - heavy duty. So more time to find a place that rebuilds starters (few and far between in this area). And a week or two wait.
Wouldn't ever consider a used police car - unless you are mechanically inclined and love to work on difficult cars. And when it comes time to sell you have to find another sucker to buy it.
Being an ex police cruiser wouldn't stop me from buying a car. There are taxi services that bought up 100,000 mile plus ex police cruisers and put another 150,000 on them.
Have had an 03 Crown Vic P71 (ex-CHP) for 7 years now. Best damn car I have ever had. Bought it with a little over 100k miles. If you are getting an ex-cop car I would go with a former highway patrol or detective/chief's unit. Probably would avoid a city car especially an ex-K9 unit.
