So I bought a new 2014 4 cyl Subaru Outback thinking this car would be great to haul stuff and for transporting my border collie. It does in fact do a great job of hauling stuff. But for day to day driving the car drives like absolute crap. Horrible handling, horrible acceleration, horrible braking.
Can someone please tell me if there is a station wagon or small SUV out there that handles like a car? That doesn't choke when you need to pass someone on the highway? That has a good brake system? That doesn't drift all over the road like my Outback does?
Because I obviously made a big, big mistake in thinking an Outback would be a good daily commuter car.
Does anyone have any experience with the BMW or Audi or Volvo wagons?
I was VERY impressed with the 2015 VW Golf Sportwagen, it is a new redesign with a new turbo gas engine or you can get the turbo diesel engine, I test drove the gas with a 5 speed manual and it was amazingly peppy and handled very well. They are in the low to mid 20s for the base/mid models.
i believe it is the engine
i believe all those subaru engines make that loud noise, especially the 4 cylinder
i'm sure there's subaru experts out there that can opine
The CVT in Subarus is known to whine, and it's very noticeable. I would be surprised if it was the engine. The manual Subarus don't have any whining noise.
my sister has an RX and it has had all manner of problems
i don't want an SUV
i really want a sedan with a large cargo hold/hatchback that drives like a sedan
Where do you live? If you are in the mountains the altitude will exacerbate the underpowered nature of that car. You lose about 3% of your horsepower every 1,000 feet of elevation gain.
You might post your questions concerns on the Subaru Outback forums.
Regarding the handling, make sure the tires are inflated to the proper pressure (see label on the door jamb) and that the car is properly aligned. Tires are over inflated for shipment and sometimes the dealer forgets to adjust when preping the car.
For a fun fast SUV try a Porsche Cayenne Turbo or Porsche or Macan (both the S & turbo are turbocharged).
The Flex's 3.5 L (213 cu in) Duratec V6 engine produces 262 hp (195 kW) and 248 lb·ft (336 N·m), and is paired with the 6-speed 6Fautomatic transmission.
A direct-injected twin-turbocharged EcoBoost engine is available for the 2010 model.
The EcoBoost produces 355 hp (265 kW) and 350 lb·ft (470 N·m) of torque. According to Ford, the turbochargers in the engine are designed to last 150,000 miles (240,000 km) or 10 years.
AWD is required with the EcoBoost engine option. Towing capacity is 4,500 lb (2,000 kg). The all-wheel drive system is capable of transferring up to 100% of torque to the front or rear axle as needed.
