The early 80's Toyota trucks are considered one of the best ever produced by Toyota, specifically the 85'. The 22R's engines are probably the most reliable 4cyl engines in the history of Toyota (with the exception of the current 2.7 4cyl which has more horse power). People have put over 400K miles on many of those.

Toyota trucks have a long history of quality and good offroad performance. Tacomas are excellent trucks. You should look into a late 90's one.
An=]bsolutely the toyota 4wds where some of the best 4wds ever in a truck. That is why youy still see so many of them and like cj7s they are a wanted vehicles. The problem is that most people thing a mudder is a good 4Wd drive. They were light ;with a grewat engine for the weight. That is also why so many off raod companies made so many parts for them .

I will be driving this rig over Marias pass near Glacier Park in a few days and I have complete confidence.

I'm sorry to those who tried the link. It doesn't work anymore so I'll just post the pics of my rig here. This 85 has 371442 miles on it at this time.

My f-250 is the best truck I ever owned it is super tough and can haul anything and get me anywhere it has more personality than my car and never left me stuck and the only downside is it not very good on gas but besides that she is amazing.

Love those Toyota truck pics.

I have a 1995 Nissan hardbody...bought it new and it has almost 240K, cannot kill this thing. It is hands down the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. The list of things I've replaced on it is very short...it's almost all original.

In the last several years, only two repairs: Clutch (finally, it lasted pretty well considering I've towed waterskis and a couple of kit cars) at around 185,000 miles. And last year I replaced the alternator for the second time. So from 185,000 to 238,000 miles it has needed just one repair. Two if you count the clutch. The AC did fail a couple of years ago but since this is my second vehicle, I haven't bothered replacing it, yikes that is a spendy thing.

And it starts and goes, never lets me down, great in the snow (Michigan.) Based on my experience with my two Nissan trucks, I'd definitely look for another one of that vintage again. I love my little red truck.

I always liked the Mitsubishi Mighty Max/Dodge D-50 4x4 trucks, they are also very reliable.

I see a lot of hands up for the Toyotas, the older ones were known to be rust buckets, probably as bad as the Vega. My ? is when they finally become not-so-rust buckets?

What's a good 4WD small pick up truck?

I wouldn't consider ANYTHING but a Toyota for what you were looking for.
