Hello!
I have moved from one state to another and am attempting to register my car. I have a lien holder. When I called the bank I asked them to send me whatever I might need to get my car registered. They said they could only fax the licensing agency since my car is not paid off. I went to the licensing agency and they said that according to the previous state (NY) laws, the title should be with me, and a fax would not be acceptable. I called the bank back and they said they would mail me a copy within the next several days.
Now my question: is a copy what the license plate agency is looking for? They will not tell me I need the original? I have called several times and no answer. I just don't want to show up with the copy they mail me and be told it is not sufficient. Am I right to assume that the "original title" is something you get only when your car is paid off?
the Motor Vehicle Department of the state you moved to is the only place you can get authoritative answers to their title/registration issues.
I could tell you what would happen here in Montana, but it would likely do you no good at all.
good luck.
