No this was white filter, car had 114K on it. I didn't even buy new one. Blew it off with the air compressor and then soaked it with some pine-sol overnight. Looked like new.... It wasn't mold, it was just dirt.

More than likely what's happened is that rodents have probably made a nest in the inlet track leading down to the cabin airfilter box behind the glove compartment. This inlet is usually in the engine bay, at the rear, passenger side of the engine compartment.

Probably similar to this

Evaporator condensate drain.

Also, you need to always split in half what folks online say.

And here's air filter box

What is all that yellow junk built up on the inside of the blower wheel? It looks like insulation.

Do I understand this correctly: the outside air gets sucked through the intake holes next to the windshield, then it goes into the engine air filter box, then some of it goes through the engine air filter and into the engine. The rest goes from the air box into the cabin filter and into the cabin? Or does the air that gets into the cabin bypass the air box altogether?
The cowel is that vented area where the windshield wipers are mounted. The cabin air filter is a part of the hvac system

That looks like a mouse nest, with a possible dead mouse still there.

To check to see if the drain tube is clogged, go under the car on the passenger side. Look for a tube, about 3/4" where the firewall turns to floor. There should be a rubber cover with a slit in it. Squeeze the slit to open it. If black gunk comes out, you're growing mold in the tube, causing the stink in the cabin.

Thank you.

Many/some cars have a "cabin" filter. No, not the air filter to the engine. A completely different filter/system.
Way too many don't know about it and don't change it. It's an inexpensive item (most cars) and there are plenty of videos on utube to show you how to do it with simple tools (not all cars).
