I'll take the 4Runner all day long. I've owned three of them and never had a problem with any.
For a nice mix of modern and reliability I'd go with a 4th Generation (2003-2009). The later ones had third row seating just in case you haul around young kids or circus performers.

yep. i have a budget of ~$17,000. looking for a 2006+ (more recent, the better) with <100k miles.

Glad we agree but I find it funny as I would stay away from 2003-2009 4Runners. Not a fan of that body style.
The Forester XT for me, assuming the role was a daily driver.
I guess it really depends on what your primary wants and needs are.
