would you rather risk buying someone else's problem or pay more for a newer, though perhaps slightly inferior (and certainly less rugged) vehicle?

I'll take the 4Runner all day long. I've owned three of them and never had a problem with any.

For a nice mix of modern and reliability I'd go with a 4th Generation (2003-2009). The later ones had third row seating just in case you haul around young kids or circus performers.

yep. i have a budget of ~$17,000. looking for a 2006+ (more recent, the better) with <100k miles.

im deathly afraid of buying someone else's problem

that said i am trying to be as diligent as possible

carfax, 1 owner (preferred), next-to-no rust (other than welds which is somewhat unavoidable in the NE), and of course a PPI

it seems by the time i run through all these checks, someone has already swooped in and bought it though!

Glad we agree but I find it funny as I would stay away from 2003-2009 4Runners. Not a fan of that body style.

while i find the 3rd gen looks better, i want the additional creature comforts and "recentness" of the 4th.

Tough question.

I have a 2012 4Runner (bought new) and have been happy except for the brake system which will kill me or someone else at some point.

That being said, I don't like buying used vehicles...

i don't either, they scare me. however, i supposed after a PPI and taking into account Toyota reliability, the risks can be mitigated.

The Forester XT for me, assuming the role was a daily driver.

I guess it really depends on what your primary wants and needs are.
