I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this engine - I have the manual version, a 2004 Chevy Cavalier.

Are there any modifications I can do to the engine in order to give it some pop? Chips? Nitrogen?

read up in the boost forum faqs on j-body.org

TBH today it would just be cheaper to find a used 2005-2007 Cobalt SS Supercharged or Dodge Neon SRT-4

The best "Pop" would be to go with an aftermarket suspension (Eibach Pro-System-Plus Suspension Kit) and bigger brakes

I agree. And I'll counter, get the Cobalt SS Turbocharged. Made way more horsepower.

Check out the Saturn Sky or Pontiac Solstice forums. Lots of tips for mods there.

Like you said, maybe a tune, or exhaust. But handling is usually the most noticeable mod on a low hp naturally aspirated engine. I'm not sure how great the tuning community is around cavaliers.

I am thinking the Op might find that a 4th Gen F-body with the LT1/LS1 or 99-04 Mustang GT might be a better route to go and be a better stating point if they plan to modify their car.

I miss that generation (and the one right after) of Camaros/Thunderbirds. The new camaros...while I appreciate what is under the hood, I cannot get over the looks of that thing.

Not much past I/H/E for those engines. Maybe you'll get lucky and find the supercharger kit GM made for those cars.
