I'd say the fine is appalling and near criminal considering Toyota was fined 1.2 billion dollars for a malfunction that was determined to have caused "at least 12 deaths". A college professor was quoted as saying its because GM acted quickly and cooperated which is strange given that GM knew about the situation for more than 10 years before the public became aware.

"Good faith" efforts being made by current GM leadership to turn the ship make it justifiable in the minds of the overseers. Mind you, these are the same overseers that bailed out the company merely a few years ago. After all, GM is too big to fail. Right?

Simple.. GM is a Detroit company in good ole 'Murica making 'Murican cars while Toyota is from some strange foreign land where Godzilla lives and who's responsible for Pearl Harbor. Foreigners always pay more.

Yeah but this is almost 14 times more.

GM: $900,000,000 / 124 deaths = $7,250,000 per person

Toyota: $1,200,000,000 / 12 deaths = $100,000,000 per person

$100,000,000 / $7,250,000 = 13.77

Wait, you mean our government paid GM a solid by cutting them a deal? Just like Japan would do for any of their companies, or Germany for theirs, or Korea for theirs, or China...

Sounds like not being stupid to me.

Yeah the only people who get the shaft are the 124 poor souls who lost their lives and their loved ones. What
price can you really put on their heads to appease the family members who are suffering with their loss.
Imo both GM and Toyota got off too easy.

And what about the family members of the sailors still on the USS Arizona in pearl harbor. They still think Japan has never paid enough either.

Where does the fine money go? Will any public good come out of it? Or does it just go into a black hold and satisfy a thirst for revenge?
