Someone said that if I wait to buy a new car in January or February, it will be ~$5,000 cheaper than if I were to buy it now. Is this true or not? I thought this was the time of the year they wanted to clear out the old model year?

They may be cheaper...but your selection will be a lot more limited. Your choices will be whatever cars are left-over after people buy the last of the 2015's now.

So if you are ok with buying a car in a unique color, or a base model, then go for it.

Actually, in my experience the best time to buy is December 30-31. Last time I bought one then the dealer's finance guy told me that it was the only car they sold that day, and their prices for the next year benefit from sales totals the previous year. When I offered $5k below sticker, I was almost shocked that they accepted without any counter-offers.
This is the time when they clear out the old models, Jan-Feb is slow because of the weather and people being broke from Christmas. The last few days of the calendar year they are desperate.

This here. People are focused on the holidays, both financially and emotionally. People just are not out buying cars. Dealers still want to sell them. It is a good buyers market.

Test the waters. I bought my car labor day weekend and got the best deal I had gotten on a car in years. That doesnt mean that every Sept deal will be like that but it cant hurt to look. Having said that if you spend forever chasing the best deal you may never buy.

Just my$.02 ymmv

You want to buy the last week of December if possible. You have a dealer with inventory sitting on his lot. The city, county or any other taxing entity is going to charge him taxes on his inventory as of December 31. The fewer cars, the less his taxes. Then you have volume discounts. A dealer can pick up thousands on volume discounts back from the auto maker. If he needs 50-60 more units to make it to the next level of volume discount for the year, he stands to make thousands in just discount if he moves those 50-60 units. All he's concerned about is covering his salemans paycheck on the sale. His profit is in the discount he'll be getting from the car maker. It's free money to him, less taxes to pay on inventory, and a great deal for you.
