We are finding with a $15k budget that it's hard to find what (ideally) we want- a Honda Odyssey (idk what I was thinking... Those babies are expensive! ) At the moment we are a 1 car family and it works for now despite having major disadvantages... And I do think we could find an older Odyssey (2009ish) for close to $15k or we could get a 2 year old Mazda 5... Much newer.. For $15...

We are debating if it would be better to go with spending the $15k budget on one newer vehicle or if we would be better off getting 2 cars for that price

I was thinking a 9/10 year old Honda Civic for hubby to drive to/from work...around $5. Then a family vehicle, some sort of SUV or minivan for $10k...

What do you think a better investment would be?

I think it's depends on the usage. If you always use your car then 1 isn't enough because other family members needs another 1. So, I prefer 2 though it's old. But doesn't matter at all.

There are times where I am at doctors appointments and have the car all day and my hubby would like to have a car. Plus I travel far to see doctors, so having a car that had good gas mileage would be nice. I find that a lot of the mini vans we are considering don't have the best mileage. But if I am buying a 10 year old car I worry that what I'm saving in gas costs will be spent on maintenance

I'd think you could get a pair of decent vehicles for $15K.

Don't let the age of a vehicle scare you away. They're built to last a lot longer than they used to.

We have an older Odyssey (2002?). Runs like a charm but they sell for cheap nowadays. If you look at a van in the $7K range and a little sedan for about the same $7K, you should end up with a pair of decent vehicles.

I have 4 vehicles that are at least 10 years old. They're all still solid performers and I wouldn't hesitate to take any one of them at any time and be worried about getting stranded.

I'd get the old Civic and a family car, much more convenient.

If there are two drivers, and sufficient need for a second car, then get a $13K car and a $2K car. Just restrict the cheap one to local discretionary driving. Don't forget that your insurance premiums will double if you have two cars.

Here's what I don't understand

A) a household with one licensed driver and two cars
B) a household with two licensed drivers and one car.

In both cases, the number of miles driven and hours on the road are exactly the same,, or if anything, B will have a little more exposure, because two people can think of more places to go separately. So why does A have to pay twice as much for liability insurance as B, for the same or less exposure?

I would PU a older model Gasser 3/4-ton PU truck like a early model 5.4 triton V-8 Super Duty Super Cab or Crew Cab or early 00's Suburban 2500 and a nice comfortable compact or mid size fuel efficient car one that is DIY accessible like a first gen Mazda 6 or Ford Focus ZX5 Hatch

It does depend on the circumstances. We have 3, 2014, 2007, and 1997. The oldest, a cheap beater is backup, in case one of the others is in for service, or one of the adult kids wants to borrow my truck. Is something wrong with the one you have now? If you keep it, you will have the entire $15,000 to spend on the Mazda 5.
